RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS

RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS

Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic inflammatory disease whereby the immune system attacks the tissues that line and cushion the joints. The joints of your body are covered with a lining called synovium. The synovium acts as a lubricant. Rheumatoid arthritis destroys the synovium, this makes the foot and ligaments much weaker leading to foot deformity. In about 20% of patients foot and ankle symptoms are the first sign of disease. This leaves the joints painful and stiff. Due to the nature of the disease the soles of the feet can become less cushioned and this can lead to very painful corns and infection.
