ANTI-WRINKLE TREATMENT
Botulinum Toxins
Approximately 900,000 anti-wrinkle treatments are administered annually in the UK. Botox is just one of the brand names of botulinium toxin. Other brands include Vistabel, Dysport, Azzalure, Xeomin and Boccoture. An anti-wrinkle effect is achieved by injecting speicfic muscle groups that are over working. The reduction in movement leads to the appearance of smoother looking skin. This treatment is temporary, and over time the toxin will be broken down by the body and eventually the movement will return. This medication can also be used to treat migraines and hyperhydrosis.
How long is the appointment?
You will be required to attend an initial consultation. Thereafter, your appointment for injectables will be booked. The actual injections are relatively quick, and take about 15 minutes. There will be a follow-up consultation two weeks after.
How long does it take to work?
This will vary from person to person but it generally takes 3 to 14 days to be effective when this happens the appearance of wrinkles will be reduced.
Does it hurt?
The needles are extremely thin so you shouldn’t be too uncomfortable. Of course, everybody has a different pain threshold, some people take paracetamol an hour before their appointment. Do avoid Ibuprofen and any blood thinning medication as this can lead to an increase in bruising, topical anaesthetic cream can be applied. There may be redness and pin-pricks on the injection site. Avoid wearing make-up,the skin needs to be as clinically clean as possible in order to avoid a potential infection.
What age can I have anti-wrinkle treatment?
You must be over 18 years of age. Most people start to have this treatment in the 30s or younger; starting earlier means that you are stopping the muscles that contract during the ageing process earlier; meaning you may reduce the formation of deeper lines in later life as the treatment prevents the skin from folding in. If you commence treatments later in life you may have deep lines the treatment therefore softens the areas rather than smooth them out completely.
What happens if I stop having the treatment?
The treatment will last 3 to 6 months, depending on the number of wrinkles that you have and your skin type. When you stop having treatment your muscles will revert to the original state of contraction and the lines will return.
Who can perform anti-wrinkle relaxing injections?
This medication is prescribed, and therefore should only be administered by the insured Medical Professional who has prescribed it for you. An initial consultation is required for all patients to attend for the first time.
