The human foot contains 26 bones, 33 joints. 107 ligaments and 19 muscles and withstands our total body weight whilst when we are weight bearing. It’s little wonder therefore that we can all experience pain and discomfort over a lifetime.
This can occur in children and young adults undergoing developmental changes, those who play a lot of sports, can also arise as a direct result from the changes in bone and soft tissue structures during the ageing process and materialise post foot surgery as foot function will be compromised.
What Are Orthotics Used For?
Foot pain
Orthotics are used to address all types of injuries including:
- Plantar fasciitis
- Heel pain/ spurs
- Metatarsalgia
- Pain in the ball of the foot
- Fallen arches
- Walking/ gait problems
- Ankle pain
Orthotics are used to treat injuries within the ankle joint and it’s surrounding soft tissue for example :
- Achilles tendonitis
- Ankle hypermobility
- Ligament strains
- Back pain and Knee pain
Orthotics assist in correcting muscle imbalances and help improve the function in other areas of the body particularly the hips knees and lower back. Correcting the posture reduces wear and tear on the joints and can avoid or delay joint replacements.
Arthritis
The improvement in Foot function and cushioning helps to offload the strain in other joints. Thus improving your knee and hip pain.
Consultation
A consultation is required to ascertain your suitability and individual requirements. Thereafter a gait analysis and a casting session is undertaken. All clinician findings are collated and your bespoke device is prescribed. This is a complex procedure and takes 2/3 weeks from start to finish.
